A Book That Nudges You a Little From Where You Are

Art of the 17th century teems with reading figures, namely saints, prophets, or lay people studying the Bible. However, that is not what Rembrandt depicts here. This is an intimate, domestic scene in which a contemporary woman is engrossed in reading. The text cannot be recognized, but given the book’s relatively small size, it is probably not a Bible.

Always that moment when a book has drawn you in convincingly, and you look up from it and tell yourself: I will be like that from now on. You won’t. You will continue to be yourself, in all your peculiarity, in your difference from the book. A book that nudges you a little from where you are: that is truly spectacular.
